Choosing The Right Contractor Is Important

It is that time of year when all of the paving and pavement maintenance contractors come out of the wood work.  Everyone is offering a “free” estimate on your parking lot and everyone is trying to lock in your project for the 2017 season.  How do you know who to choose?  Some people will base their decision solely on price, the best price wins the job.  Some will base their decision based on a referral from someone else.  Others will have no idea on how to make their decision.  The most important thing is that you get the best quality job for your money.

When choosing your pavement contractor there are many things you should be looking at.  Perhaps the first thing you should look at is experience.  How long has this company been in business?  Unfortunately, it is very easy to get into the pavement maintenance business and if you contract with someone who is only after your money, you may not be very happy in the end.

Another thing you should look at is their standing within the community.  This is evident by projects they have completed in the community as well as documented on the Better Business Bureau website.  When companies pay to be accredited through the BBB, they are saying “we welcome your feedback – good or bad, and are committed to providing you with quality service and workmanship”.

Then there are 5 key areas pertaining to your specific project that you should take into consideration:

Proper Specifications
It is important to make sure that your contractor provides you with specifications that meet the needs of your parking lot.  Determining whether you need repair, maintenance or resurfacing is a part of what we do at Surface Engineering and at no obligation to the client.  A satisfactory resolution is what our priority will be.

Proper Materials
Quality materials are a must!  Every project has specific material requirements to obtain durability and long term performance.  Surface Engineering maintains a longstanding working relationship with local suppliers to assure that these resources are available to each of our clients.

Ability to Perform
A contractor must be able to perform in a timely manner.  You should be able to verify that your contractor can start and complete a job on time, and do exactly what they say they will do.  Surface Engineering believes that your time is valuable and that you should not have to be inconvenienced more that what is reasonable and necessary.  We are able to complete most jobs in 1/2 the time it takes the other guy.

References with Job Sites
Surface Engineering can provide you with current and past references with job site locations.  Of course we will provide you with positive references, but this will give you the opportunity to visit the job site and experience the level of quality and workmanship we provide, for yourself.  You can also visit the BBB to make sure all contractors share the same A+ rating Surface Engineering has held for nearly 20 consecutive years.

Cost of the Job
The price of the project should be competitive.  Super low bids are often indicative of a compromise in specifications or materials.  Be certain that all of the costs associated with the project are stated in the proposal.  Surface Engineering will outline the potential for additional costs and specify and discuss those potential costs prior to authorization and start of the project.

As you can see, choosing the right contractor is important.  It can be the difference between a positive experience and a not so positive experience.  It can also be the difference in thousands of dollars spent or not.

Your advice to find a paving contractor that can finish the job on time and give you what you want would be useful. If you get the task done on time, it could prevent it from causing problems and getting in the way of your life. When choosing a contractor, you’d probably want to talk to them in person to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to finish the project quickly and efficiently.
